Openings in Getting Started with Genetic Genealogy at SLIG 2015

We've opened a few more seats in the Getting Started with Genetic Genealogy course being offered in January at the 2015 Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). The website is not handling these last minute openings. Contact Valerie Hansen, SLIG Registrar at sligregistrar@ugagenealogy.org if you are interested and to determine if seats are still available. SLIG announced this on their Facebook page recently so some of the seats may have been taken. Consider getting on the waiting list as there is always a possibility someone registered may have to cancel thereby opening up a seat.

The Getting Started course will help those with little or no genetic genealogy experience learn the basics. We'll also cover some intermediate level analysis techniques for genetic genealogy. Basics of Y-DNA, mitochondrial DNA, X-DNA, and autosomal DNA will be covered. Hands-on exercises illustrate how to integrate the DNA test results with your genealogical research. The focus is on using DNA for genealogy, covering only as much biology as a genealogist needs to understand. Sessions are taught by me (Debbie Parker Wayne), CeCe Moore, and Blaine Bettinger. See the SLIG website at http://www.infouga.org/cpage.php?pt=42 for more information.

  1. Perhaps this class is too basic for me? I have tested with all three companies and have had family members also test. We have uploaded our information to Gedmatch.
Now I am wondering what to do next? I have some major road blocks in my research and was hoping DNA would help. Also, I'm trying to help a cousin find out who his father is.
Can this class take me to the next level of genetic genealogy and help me analyze my DNA data?

    1. Cathy, it is hard to say if this will be too basic for you or not. If all you have done is had family members tested and uploaded the data to GEDMatch then you might learn more about how to analyze the data in this course. The course includes hands-on exercises to analyze data - exactly what you need to do "next" after getting results. See http://www.ugagenealogy.org/cpage.php?pt=326 for each session title; SLIG did not incldue the session descriptions, just the titles. If you have already studied a lot on your own and done analysis of your DNA results you might find the advanced course a better fit. the advanced course is full, as far as I know now, but may be offered again in the future. Have you already taken the online course offered by the DNA adoption group? See http://dnaadoption.com/index.php?page=online-classes for more information on this inline course. I hope this helps. Debbie
